Plant functional type affects nitrogen dynamics in urban park soils similarly to boreal forest soils

چکیده
Abstract Purpose Although plant functional type can modulate soils and their processes in natural, nitrogen (N)-limited ecosystems, little is known about ability to influence soil N dynamics urban ecosystems that have high excess input. We investigated whether i) effects on parks follow the same pattern as those undisturbed natural/semi-natural forests, ii) park age influences under boreal climate. Methods selected 13 of varying ages (young: 10 15, old: > 70 years), 5 forests (> 80 years) southern Finland. In these we measured total concentration, availability inorganic N, nitrous oxide (N 2 O) flux earthworm biomass three types (evergreen tree, deciduous lawn). Results Our results showed influenced also greenspace soils, which may relate clear effect biomass. Evergreen trees tended highest foster accumulation reduce O emissions parks. Moreover, with increasing age, increased but decreased lawns, further emphasising role vegetation affecting greenspaces. Conclusions show that, similar type, irrespective

providing me these excellent working facilities and the support of Metla. I want to thank my supervisor Docent Aino Smolander for her endless support and encouragement. As for the past few years I was engaged with an another project, I think I could not have completed this work without having such a good supervisor! I also value the fun field trips we shared. To the "extended soil group" I am g...
متن کاملForest productivity decline caused by successional paludification of boreal soils.
Long-term forest productivity decline in boreal forests has been extensively studied in the last decades, yet its causes are still unclear. Soil conditions associated with soil organic matter accumulation are thought to be responsible for site productivity decline. The objectives of this study were to determine if paludification of boreal soils resulted in reduced forest productivity, and to id...

[1] Plant productivity in upland tundra and boreal forest is demonstrably limited by nitrogen (N) and indirect evidence from field studies suggests that decomposition by soil microbes may be similarly limited. As climate warms at high latitudes, understanding the response of soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition to increased soil temperature may be crucial for determining the net effect of wa...
متن کاملNitrogen dynamics in Amazon forest and pasture soils measured by N pool dilution
Clearing tropical forests of the Amazon Basin for pasture alters rates of soil nitrogen cycling. Previous studies have shown that rates of soil net N mineralization and net nitri®cation are lower in established pastures than in forests. We compared soil inorganic N concentrations, rates of net and gross mineralization and net and gross nitri®cation in a chronosequence and an experimental slash-...
